Purpose: This study aims to design an intelligent model for the circulation desk, its activities, and the associated borrowing processes. In addition to the primary objective, several secondary goals were pursued, including the automation of processes such as user authentication, resource lending, resource return, shelving resources according to classification order, and supporting shelf-reading operations.
Methodology: This applied research adopts a qualitative approach using the meta-synthesis method based on Sandelowski’s seven-step framework. Initially, 167 articles were retrieved; after applying the seven-step process, 27 relevant articles were selected and included in the study. In the first stage, a checklist was used as the data collection tool. The extracted indicators were then refined and validated using the fuzzy Delphi technique. To ensure the validity and reliability of the study, an extensive review of the related literature was conducted, and expert opinions regarding the characteristics of the intelligent circulation desk were collected. The Delphi panel consisted of 10 experts in Information Science and 5 experts in Artificial Intelligence and Information Technology.
Findings: The meta-synthesis of previous studies resulted in the identification of 51 conceptual codes, 10 thematic dimensions, and 6 key indicators. The core components of the proposed framework for designing the intelligent circulation desk include technology, intelligent processes, interaction and user experience, management and security, development and collaboration, and the application of innovative technologies.
Conclusion: The application of artificial intelligence in library circulation processes is critically important, as it can improve operational efficiency, accuracy, and user experience. By automating borrowing and return procedures, AI can significantly reduce user wait times and enable staff to focus on more essential tasks. Furthermore, through the use of advanced algorithms, AI systems can analyze resource usage patterns and provide personalized services tailored to users’ specific needs. These capabilities not only enhance user satisfaction but also contribute to optimal resource management and support strategic decision-making in libraries—particularly in today’s rapidly evolving information environment, where innovation and adaptability are more important than ever.
