Purpose: The existence of different attitudes toward the concept of "information management,
the multifaceted nature of this term, has created challenges in achieving consensus on its cognitive
and practical aspects, as well as its role in education, research, and various scientific disciplines, particularly in knowledge and information science. It appears that there are diverse interpretations of the concept, topic, and phrase "information management, inconsistency and stagnation in the pursuit of a common goal in this regard. For example, a basic question in this context is: What topics should education and research in this field prioritize? Despite reviewing the literature, it is evident that a methodical and systematic approach to this issue has not been established. Consequently, a common goal in this field remains elusive, and efforts appear scattered and isolated. As a result, none of the studies and research conducted have even clarified the meaning of this phrase for us. This research has been conducted to address several key questions: What is the concept of information management? From what perspectives can information management be understood, and what are the primary approaches within this field? What is the underlying philosophy of information management? How does this field relate to knowledge and information science? What are the educational, research, and practical priorities in information management? Is there a consensus on these matters? The presence of these fundamental questions highlights the need for a methodical and systematic examination of the cognitive and conceptual dimensions of information management. In this context, this research aims to explain the main approaches to the concept of information management, exploring its significance
and dimensions within a comprehensive framework. This stands in contrast to narrow and one-dimensional perspectives on the subject. Through this broader approach, the study seeks to clarify the role of information management within the fields of knowledge and information science, as well as the implications of various interpretations of the concept in this field.
Method: The research method employed is documentary-analytical, which primarily involves the use of texts and reflects on the classification of various viewpoints. This research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of information management by exploring its major approaches. It delves into the fields of knowledge and information science, updating the concept within the context of the emerging information and knowledge society. The goal is to design a systematic framework for understanding the methods of information management.
Findings: In this research, we reflect on the significant perspectives and various attitudes toward information management, including individual, organizational, national, and international viewpoints, as well as their relationship with different categories of information. We explored every conceivable angle within this context. Continuing with a process-oriented approach to information management, we examined the project's themes in knowledge and information science, assessing our current position and priorities, as well as the underlying philosophy of information management. Ultimately, we focused on the general and cognitive aspects of information management, its role in knowledge and information science, and its scientific, technological, practical, managerial, and developmental implications. It became evident that information management requires a philosophical framework to effectively identify goals and priorities.
Conclusion: In this research, we emphasize the importance of developing a conceptual framework for information management within the field of knowledge and information science, in addition to outlining the primary approaches to information management. A clear understanding and definition of the concept of information management is decisive for effective planning in the educational, research, and technological aspects of knowledge and information science. It is argued that all subsequent consequences in the practical, managerial, developmental, and prospective aspects of information management are inevitable outcomes derived from the conceptual framework of information management. Finally, it has been emphasized that creating a conceptual system for this field necessitates careful consideration of the fundamental concepts and vocabulary. Understanding the essence of this field is crucial, as the establishment and advancement of a conceptual framework for information management in knowledge and information science demand a focus on these concepts and vocabulary, particularly in its contemporary form, which is both discursive and systematic.
