The present study is a systematic review of research on search formulation behaviors in children and adolescents in order to identify barriers and solutions. For this purpose, research in the field of query formulation in children and adolescents was identified in Persian-language databases and valid English-language databases. Findings showed spelling weakness, lack of typing skills, low domain knowledge, lexical limitation, low cognitive ability, ability to evaluate and select retrieved results, rely on review search, use of natural language keywords, inability to use logical operators, weakness in query formulation, low ability in complex tasks are the most important obstacles and problems faced by children and adolescents in query formulation. Designing a user-friendly interface for children and adolescents using visual and auditory interfaces, spelling control and question suggestion tools, and teaching children and teens how to use the user interface and search query formulation are presented as solutions to remove barriers to query formulation. It seems that before teaching the use of user relations and digital media literacy to this group, research is needed to understand the query formulation behaviors of Iranian children and adolescents.
